One of my home servers is a Mac mini where I host OS X Server, SecuritySpy (highly recommend if you want to setup you own security system) and Plex. Few days ago I decided to do a very simple thing, setup to web proxy from OS X Server to SecuritySpy web server. I thought it will be a simple Apache configuration modification, but actually a little bit more complicated.
The best solution is to use one or more Axis network video servers or other video server supported by SecuritySpy. See a complete list of supported network video servers here. Video servers provide high-quality video and can be connected to the computer via an ethernet network over long distances if required.
For the AAC codec, you can set a quality level, which will determine the bitrate of the encoded audio data (the exact bitrate used will depend on the sample rate of the source audio, which can vary from camera to camera). A value of around 50 gives reasonably good quality audio at an efficient bitrate.
SecuritySpy has broadcasting features for streaming real-time video over a network, using the standard Real-Time Transport Protocol/Real-Time Streaming Protocol (RTP/RTSP). The video can be viewed using Apple's QuickTime Player application, or sent to Apple's QuickTime Streaming Server (QTSS) for large-scale delivery. The use of compression such as MPEG-4 makes SecuritySpy's broadcasting a powerful and efficient method of real-time content delivery. Multiple simultaneous streams from multiple cameras are supported, as well as both unicast and multicast streams. You can even create multiple simultaneous streams from the same camera, with different compression and bandwidth settings.
